What is NEMIS? 

NEMIS stands for the National Education Management Information System. Think of it as this massive door where you can get access to education data in Kenya. The Platform captures, stores, and processes information on students, teachers, and educational institutions across Kenya. The primary goal of NEMIS is to enhance decision-making, improve resource allocation, and increase transparency within the education sector. By digitizing records and processes, NEMIS facilitates a more streamlined and efficient management of the country’s education system.

What is UPI in NEMIS?

UPI is a six-character code that stands for “Unique Personal Identifier.” Its purpose is to help in tracking the academic progress of each teacher, student, and staff member in the education system in Kenya. In summary, a UPI helps in:

  1. Identify and Tracking of fake educational certificates.
  2. It helps in solving the issue of “ghost” teachers, as each has a unique number.
  3. It helps provide accurate data about student enrollment at various education levels in Kenya and monitors their progress.

NEMIS Number and How to Find a NEMIS UPI Number

Every person or institution registered with the NEMIS system has a unique NEMIS number. So this brings us to what is a NEMIS number? in other words a NEMIS Number is similar to the UPI number we discussed earlier. The NEMIS UPI number is significant for accurate and efficient record-keeping, Tracking of student and teacher performance, and management of resources. 

To find a NEMIS UPI number, whether as a student, parent, or educational administrator, here are the steps to take:

  1. Visit the Official NEMIS Website
  2. Login Using your credentials to access the system.
  3. Once logged in, go to the section where student information is available for students; for other users, you can locate a similar feature on your dashboard.
  4. Utilize the available search options to find your student details, such as name, school, or class.
  5. Upon locating the student’s details, you should be able to view your UPI number.

Requirements for Accessing the NEMIS Portal

Before accessing the NEMIS portal there are a few things that you should keep in mind. First, to use the Portal services, you are required to have the following:

  • A laptop or desktop running Windows Vista or a higher operating system.
  • Your PC should have a processor with a speed of at least 2.4 GHz to Support NEMIS tasks.
  • Your PC should have 1 GB of RAM or more. Plus, 120 GB of free hard disk space.
  • A modern browser is installed on Your PC, preferably Google Chrome, for Logging into the NEMIS website.
  • A reliable internet connection with a speed of over 2MBPS (3G, 4G, or 5G).
  • A digital camera for capturing learner images.

Additionally, for students, teachers, and schools, there are a few names that will be required from you to use the NEMIS portal efficiently; this includes:


  • Full name as it appears on the birth certificate.
  • Date of birth.
  • Nationality.
  • Home county and sub-county.
  • Gender.
  • Special needs (if applicable).
  • Parent contacts.
  • Parent/guardian identification number.

How to Register On the NEMIS Portal

1. Visit the NEMIS Portal:

 Start by accessing the NEMIS website at www.nemis.education.go.ke. Click on the Register if new

2. Fill in the Registration Form:

On this page, all new users are required to provide details such as the name of your institution, your full name, gender, ID number, responsibilities, phone number, and email address.

3. Create a Password:

Choose a strong password for your account. It should be a combination of letters and numbers, with a minimum length of 8 characters.

4. Verify Your Account:

After submitting the registration form, you’ll receive a verification code via email. Enter this code on the Portal to complete the verification process, after which you will receive your login credentials.

3. Staff Module

Dedicated to the workforce behind Kenya’s education, the Staff Module keeps track of details regarding teachers and non-teaching staff. It includes sub-modules for:
